New jazz compositions, jazz standards, and Brazilian favourites by Antonio Carlos Jobim were performed by the RUBIM DE TOLEDO OCTET, on Oct 27th and 28th, 2011, at the Cantos Music Foundation (134 – 11 Avenue, SE, Calgary) as part of the Summit Jazz Series for the 2011/2012 season.

Bassist, Rubim De Toledo, who composed most most of the pieces, performed on the Bass Fiddle, accompanied by Jim Brenan on Tenor Saxophone and Bass Clarinet, Jon McCaslin on Drums and Mark DeJong on Tenor Saxophone. Fine piano riffs were provided by Michelle Gregoire, tucked far into the corner. Aldo Aguirre on Violin and Raul Tabera, who played a different set of Percussion instruments, added some very nice Afro-Cuban elements to the sounds. Allison Lynch’s sweet and clear soprano vocals provided a nice texture to the evening’s fare.

Dancers, Sarisa de Toledo, Dinou Marlett-Stuart and Edgar Gilbert-Reyes brought additional movement to the music with contemporary jazz dancing. The themes of love, jealousy and loss were given shape during their performance of Tango.

Noel Bégin’s slides, including some Cuban scenes, provided colour.

The Jazz Summit Series will continue on December 10th with a performance featuring Brendon McElroy on Bass, Mark DeJong on Tenor Sax, Aaron Young on Guitar and Jon McCaslin on Drums. Don’t miss.

Yorkshire singer, Kate Rusby has a fine, clear voice and sings British folk songs with great feeling and phrasing. Her guitar work is dextrous, light and pleasant. Quite a lot of her music is traditional — “As I Roved Out” and “Annan Waters” from her Hourglass album, for example — but much of it is her own compositions as well. Audiences will be sure to enjoy this concert presented by the standard-bearer of folk music in Calgary, The Calgary Folk Club.
